A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE OHIO BAR AUTOMATED RESEARCH (OBAR) SYSTEM IS PROVIDED, AND SEVERAL POSSIBLE PROBLEMS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF SUCH A SYSTEM ARE STATED.
Abstract
THE FOUR BASIC FEATURES OF THE OBAR SYSTEM ARE: THE FULL TEXT OF LEGAL MATERIAL IS SEARCHABLE ON A FULL TEXT BASIS; EACH SUBSCRIBER HAS DIRECT ACCESS TO THE COMPUTER ON A FULL TIME-SHARING BASIS; THE LAWYER CAN CONDUCT A CONTINUING DIALOGUE WITH THE COMPUTER; AND THE PROGRAM PERMITS THE LAWYER TO BROWSE THROUGH THE DOCUMENTS HE SELECTS. IT WAS NOTED THAT THE BAR ITSELF SHOULD MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE AUTOMATED RESEARCH TO INSURE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROGRAM WHICH MEETS THE LAWYERS' NEEDS. OTHER PROBLEM AREAS WERE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE, PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, AND SYSTEMS COST.
