This report presents results of the 11th annual Australian National Prison Census, which was conducted on June 30, 1992, and included all convicted and nonconvicted persons housed in adult correctional institutions in all Australian jurisdictions.
Abstract
The statistics contained in the report are presented in four sections. The first summarizes the basic characteristics of inmates, their offenses, and sentences; tables are formatted to allow gender and jurisdictional comparisons. In the second section, aggregated figures for all jurisdictions are used to produce tables showing the relevant characteristics of offenders and sentences and enabling comparisons between offense types. The third section contains tables that allow interstate comparisons of legal status and sentence lengths for various offenses. The final section compiles data based on the past 10 years of the census to summarize trends in key characteristics of the Australian prison population. 46 tables, 14 figures, and 3 appendixes
