Results of the June 1983 National Prison Census of Australian prisoners are presented in tabular form.
Abstract
Explanatory notes provide information on data collection techniques, coverage, and definitions of terms used in the census. Statistics are presented in three parts. Summary tables show the basic characterictics of prisoners, their offenses and sentences, and compare inmates by sex and jurisdiction. Tables of percentages, rates per 100,000 population, and graphic representations are included where appropriate. Aggregate figures for all jurisdictions are presented in crosstabulation by most serious offenses. These show relevant offender characteristics and sentences, permitting comparisons between the various offense types. In the third section, offender legal status, sentence for most serious offense, aggregate sentence, and expected duration of imprisonment are shown, classified by most serious offense for each jurisdiction.
