The Northern Territory Police Service in Australia has 704 members who patrol a jurisdiction of 1.3 million square miles and a population of 155,000, using aircraft and four- wheel drive vehicles.
Abstract
The police conduct surveillance tours covering thousands of miles. Their aircraft carry detectives to distant crime scenes, carry prisoners, and conduct searches for lost people or offenders. Most of the population lives in two major cities, while the rest is scattered throughout the territory in small, isolated communities. The agency's communications unit has a crucial role, because it is often the only link with the outside world for the remote bush stations. The agency also has a training college, a community relations branch, a traffic section, a marine and fisheries unit, and a two-member unit to combat gold stealing. The officers in the rural police stations have many extra duties, as their stations are located in remote aboriginal communities and farming areas. Bush officers are assisted by aboriginal police aides. Photographs
