This annual report presents the philosophy of the Austin Police Department and highlights accomplishments that directly relate to achieving self-reliant neighborhoods through community policing.
Abstract
Austin was one of five cities in the Nation awarded a Federal grant to develop a community policing prototype. The prototype will be used as a model for community policing throughout the country and as a vehicle to promote the idea of self-reliant neighborhoods in Austin. Self-reliant neighborhoods are those that are linked to resources within their own community as well as resources outside the community that promote safer, healthier environments in which to live, work, and raise families. In early 1993, the department developed a guide to achieve self-reliant neighborhoods through community policing. Three goals were established: to determine the difference between what citizens want and what the police can provide, to enrich the work experience for police personnel, and to optimize resources through investment in technology and long-range planning. Activities undertaken in 1993 to achieve these goals are outlined. Projects slated for 1994 are also listed. Crime statistics for 1993 show 51,468 reported major crimes, a 3-percent decrease from the number reported in 1992. An organizational chart is included.
