Task force members discuss central city violent crime problems (particularly in New York City) and prevention measures and debate related issues and recommendations.
Abstract
Topics discussed in the first session are crime control problems of big cities, such as New York, and the need for improved information management systems; the LEAA experience and the Federal Government's role in funding crime control programs; and the deterrent effect of punitive approaches to violent crimes such as rape and mugging. The second session consists of testimony by the president of the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City and by the vice president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police on issues faced by the Crime Commission and successes and failures in federally funded law enforcement assistant programs. A discussion on the wording of the Phase II task force report's issues and recommendations follows. Participants include attorneys, police chiefs, educators, and public defenders. New York City's mayor, police commissioner, and Bronx Conuty, N.Y. district attorney also contributed to the sessions as well as Harry Dogin, former administrator for LEAA, and Griffin Bell, former Attorney General.
