Effective training of assessors is crucial to the success of the assessment center method in evaluating the skills of law enforcement personnel.
Abstract
The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) actively promotes the use of assessment centers by conducting assessment centers in law enforcement agencies across the country, conducting an annual training conference, and publishing articles. Factors to consider in selecting potential assessors are previous assessors and the composition of the assessor team. IACP uses a 2-phase method in assessor accuracy training. First, assessors are provided with an orientation to background and procedures. Second, and most important, are the practice and feedback using the actual exercises to be evaluated. After the first phase of training, assessors will understand the job, the organization, the community, the exercises to be used, the use of behavioral descriptions, the evaluation dimensions, and the rating of report forms. During the next phase of training, videos are used in practice and feedback exercises to help the assessors develop the skills of note taking, categorizing behaviors, report writing, and rating. The administrator functions as a facilitator, directing and encouraging discussion and structuring the situation so that most feedback is received from other assessors. 5 references
