A STUDY ASSESSING THE PREVALENCE, INCIDENCE, FREQUENCY AND SITUATIONAL CONTENT OF ALL TYPES OF DRUG USE WITHIN THE GENERAL POPULATION OF NEW YORK.
Abstract
THIS REPORT INCLUDES THE RESULTS OF SOME SECONDARY SURVEYS ON THE ACCURACY OF BELIEFS CONCERNING DRUG USE, THE VISIBILITY OF PERSONS WHO MISUSE DRUGS, AND THE GENERAL POPULATION'S ATTITUDES TOWARD VARIOUS TYPES OF DRUG ABUSE AND ABUSERS. THE STATISTICAL BASE FROM WHICH THE RESPONDENTS WERE SELECTED WAS VERY CAREFULLY PLANNED AND RESULTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE HIGHLY RELIABLE. IN ADDITION TO THE ACTUAL INTERVIEWS, OVER THIRTEEN MILLION NEW YORK CITIZENS WERE SURVEYED. IN GENERAL, THE RESULTS OF THIS EXTENSIVE STUDY SHOWED A HIGH RATE OF IGNORANCE CONCERNING DRUG ABUSE AND ABUSERS ON THE PART OF THE GENERAL POPULATION AND AN EQUALLY HIGH INCIDENCE OF GENERAL DRUG USE AMONG THE THIRTEEN MILLION RESPONDENTS INVOLVED IN THE STUDY. DATA WERE COLLECTED FOR 17 DIFFERENT DRUGS AND THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN VARIOUS TABLES INDICATING PREVALENCE, DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS, USE CHARACTERISTICS, AND CONCURRENT REGULAR USE. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERSONAL DRUG USE AND KNOWLEDGE OF PERSONS WHO USE DRUGS WERE ANALYZED.
