Two studies were conducted to examine the component structure of response patterns on the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) in unmarried college student samples.
Abstract
The first study, which examined 268 male and 399 female subjects' self-reports of conflict tactics used with their dating partners, compared the component structures of the data for male and female subjects. Principal component analyses revealed a four- component solution for both sexes: (1) reasoning; (2) verbal aggression/coercion; (3) physical aggression/threat; and (4) severe aggression. A subsequent study replicated the component solution with a sample of 116 men and 172 women. The component solution found in the sample was consistent with those found in earlier studies of the CTS with married couples. Study findings suggest that the aggression indices developed for assessing marital aggression are appropriate for use in unmarried samples; however, they raise questions about what items to include on indices derived from the CTS. 3 tables and 11 references
