The Testing Program of Color Test Reagents/Kits for Preliminary Identification of Drugs of Abuse used National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Standard 0605.00.
Abstract
The program was conducted by the Technology Assessment Program Information Center of the International Association of Chiefs of Police under a grant of NIJ. Twelve kits were tested according to the detailed test procedures of the standard, and the test results were compared to the minimum performance requirements specified by the standard to determine whether or not the reagents/kits complied with each of those requirements. The standard's principal provisions include names of the drugs tentatively identified by each reagent in the kit, clear instructions for making the tests, safety precautions to be observed in using the kits, and instructions concerning the need for training and the basic limitations of the reagents. Other provisions are labeling of the reagents, inspection of workmanship, materials for safe disposal of used reagents, color samples for matching test results, colors specified by the manufacturer for each reagent when it is tested according to specified conditions, and specification of drug detection limits. Test results for each kit, reagent/drug combinations tested, references, and the NIJ Standard are provided.
