THIS MANUAL WAS DEVELOPED AS PART OF A RESEARCH PROGRAM DESIGNED TO CONSTRUCT METHODS FOR EVALUATING PERSONS WHO APPLY FOR POSITIONS IN POLICE WORK AND FOR ASSESSING THE POTENTIAL OF PRESENT POLICE OFFICERS BEING CONSIDERED FOR PROMOTION. TWO EVALUATION INSTRUMENTS WERE DEVELOPED DURING THE COURSE OF THIS PROGRAM: THE POLICE CAREER INDEX, WHICH CONSISTS OF AN OBJECTIVELY SCORED SCREENING INVENTORY, AND THE REGIONAL ASSESSMENT CENTER. THIS SECOND PROCEDURE CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF POLICE JOB SIMULATION EXERCISES DESIGNED TO ELICIT BEHAVIORAL INDICATORS OF A PERSON'S POTENTIAL FOR SUCCESS IN VARIOUS ASPECTS OF POLICE WORK. ASSESSOR'S MANUALS FOR THE REGIONAL ASSESSMENT CENTER PROCEDURE WERE PREPARED FOR FOUR POLICE FUNCTIONS: PATROL OFFICERS, DETECTIVES, SERGEANTS, AND MIDDLE LEVEL COMMAND PERSONNEL. THIS MANUAL CONTAINS COMPLETE DEFINITIONS FOR THE ASSESSMENT DIMENSIONS TAPPED BY THE JOB SIMULATIONS; DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSESSORS ON HOW TO CONDUCT EXERCISES, OBSERVE CANDIDATES, AND EVALUATE THEIR PERFORMANCES; SAMPLE COPIES OF ALL WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS AND MATERIALS FOR CANDIDATES; AND SAMPLE COPIES OF ALL REPORT AND RATING FORMS TO BE COMPLETED BY ASSESSOR'S AFTER EACH EXERCISE. THE JOB SIMULATIONS IN THIS ASSESSOR'S MANUAL FOR DETECTIVES TEST CANDIDATES' PERFORMANCE IN THE AREAS OF INVESTIGATING CRIME SCENES; ARREST, SEARCH AND SEIZURE; INTERROGATIONS; CASE INVESTIGATION; REPORT WRITING; PUBLIC RELATIONS; AND COOPERATION. FOR THE OTHER ASSESSOR'S MANUALS AND THE FINAL PROJECT REPORT, SEE NCJ-28087 TO NCJ-28090.
