The ASPIRA Association was established in the late 1960s to promote the educational development of Hispanic students; the ASPIRA counseling program encouraged Hispanics to stay in school until graduation, continue on to postsecondary education, and to pursue graduate and professional careers in various fields.
Abstract
This follow-up study documented the dropout phenomenon among Puerto Rican and other Hispanic students living in five cities in which an ASPIRA affiliate is located. Representative samples of students and parents completed questionnaires covering school assessment, educational expectations, study and reading habits, educational life histories, parent-child relationships, personal history, language proficiency, and job history. Archival records on Hispanic students were provided by the schools. The findings showed that students who are chronically truant are more likely to drop out of school altogether. Lower educational expectations, grade retention, and academic performance were all associated with higher rates of dropping out. 28 references
