Qualitative information on the future challenges of Asian gangs is presented in this article, based on research projects of the National Gang Research Center and on case work and interviews by the author in the Houston and Los Angeles areas.
Abstract
The article begins by noting the central focus of the theoretical debate on Asian gangs is on whether these gangs are different from other ethnic gangs in terms of affiliation, activities, crime patterns, and basic characteristics. Various studies of Asian gangs and key concepts presented by major studies of Asian gang affiliation are reviewed. A new profile of Asian gangs and their activities is presented, and consideration is paid to new Asian ethnic groups and to new grouping trends in the ethnic classification of Asian gangs. The author indicates Asian crimes are committed by Asian criminals from different Asian criminal groups. He discusses Asian crime categories, specifically traditional and non-traditional crimes, international crimes, and high tech crimes committed by Asian gangs. 19 references and 8 tables
