This report presents the results of a study of parole outcomes of 177 randomly selected inmates who had participated in the California Arts-in-Corrections program for a minimum of once weekly for six months. Favorable or unfavorable parole outcomes for a 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year periods were compared to statistics compiled for parole outcomes for all California Department of Corrections (CDC) parolees.
Abstract
The results show that the Arts-in-Corrections participants at six months after parole had an 88 percent favorable outcome as compared to a 72.25 percent rate for all CDC parolees. For the 1- and 2-year period, the arts program favorable rate was 74.2 percent and 69.2 percent, respectively as compared to CDC parolees rates of 49.6 percent and 42 percent, respectively. Also favorable rates based on times since release increased to a greater degree for the arts program participants than for all CDC parolees. These data indicate that the Arts-in-Corrections program produces a more favorable outcome for parolees.
