Abstract
THIS STUDY, WHICH RAN FROM JULY 1, 1973 THROUGH JUNE 30, 1974, EXAMINED THE CONTEXT IN WHICH POLICE FACE ARREST DECISIONS, THE TYPES OF DECISIONS THEY MAKE, AND THE RESULTS OF THOSE CHOICES AS REFLECTED IN POLICE LITERATURE. THIS LITERATURE WAS OBTAINED THROUGH THE FOLLOWING SOURCES: THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON CRIME AND DELINQUENCY (NCCD) INFORMATION CENTER), THE NCCD CRIME AND DELINQUENCY LIBRARY, LIBRARIES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA CAMPUSES, AND TELEPHONE 'CHAIN INTERVIEWS' WITH AUTHORS OF PERTINENT WRITINGS. A BIFURCATED INTERVIEW OF A SAMPLE OF POLICE OFFICERS WAS USED TO ASSESS THE ACCURACY OF THE LITERATURE PERTAINING TO POLICE OFFICER'S BELIEFS ABOUT THEIR ARREST DECISION EFFECTS. THE LITERATURE ITSELF WAS ASSESSED ACCORDING TO THE STUDY'S INTERNAL VALIDITY, STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES, INTERNAL CONSISTENCY, EXTERNAL VALIDITY AND POLICY RELEVANCE. AN EXTENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTICLES, BOOKS, REPORTS, GRANT APPLICATIONS, AND MISCELLANEOUS WORKS UNEARTHED FOR THIS STUDY IS INCLUDED AT THE END OF THIS VOLUME. (FOR VOLUMES ONE AND THREE, SEE NCJ-18830 AND 18832).
