TWO-PART VOLUME WHICH PROVIDES A SYNOPSIS OF THE 'ADAPT' PROJECT AND CONTAINS A POLICE TRAINING SCRIPT DESIGNED FOR USE BY POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN STAFF TRAINING.
Abstract
THE 'ADAPT' (ARREST DECISIONS AS PRELUDES TO ?) PROJECT, IN OPERATION FROM JULY 1, 1973 THROUGH JUNE 30, 1974, WAS DESIGNED TO EVALUATE THE POLICE DIVERSION EVALUATION LITERATURE AND TO DRAW OUT THE POLICY IMPLICATIONS IN THAT LITERATURE. SPECIAL EMPHASIS WAS GIVEN TO THE EFFECTS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT USE OF THE INTERFACES BETWEEN ARREST AND OTHER COMMUNITY ALTERNATIVES. THIS ADMINISTRATIVE SUMMARY ABSTRACTS THE PROJECT, PRESENTING A SKELETON ACCOUNT OF 'ADAPT'. THE TRAINING SCRIPT IS WRITTEN FOR USE EITHER AS AN IMPROVISATIONAL DEVICE OR IN A STAGE PRESENTATION OR 'ROLE PLAY'. THE SCRIPT'S THRUST IS THE BROADENED ACQUAINTANCE OF OFFICERS WITH THE FACT THAT ALTERNATIVES TO ARREST EXIST, THAT THEIR USE IS PERVASIVE, AND THAT VARIOUS ALTERNATES HAVE DIFFERENTIAL EFFECTS. (FOR VOLUMES TWO AND THREE OF THIS REPORT, SEE NCJ-18831 AND 18832).
