If campus police were adequately armed, they would require less support from overburdened local police, would be able to provide support to local police, and would be better prepared to protect themselves and those whom they serve.
Abstract
Campus police officers deal primarily with young adults often living on their own for the first time. The availability of alcohol and drugs on campus also increases the risk of assaults and other criminal behaviors. Campus officers handle traffic stops, robberies, arson, and domestic disturbances, and they are often requested by local police to assist them in handling crime in areas surrounding the campus. Given these responsibilities, campus officers should be equipped with firearms and be trained to use them properly.
