OVER A FOUR DECADE PERIOD, IT WAS FOUND THAT VIOLENT CRIMES CORRELATE HIGHLY WITH POPULATION DENSITY AND THAT POPULATION DENSITY IS THE SINGLE MOST EFFECTIVE INDICATOR OF URBAN CHARACTER.
Abstract
THE REGION STUDIED WAS FOUND TO HAVE A STEADY INCREASE IN POPULATION DENSITY OVER THE PERIOD CONSIDERED. REPORTED RATES FOR VIOLENT CRIMES DISPLAYED A GREATER RELATIVE INCREASE THAN DID PROPERTY CRIMES RATES DURING THE LAST DECADE OF THE STUDY. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE REGIONAL CRIME GRADIENT IS AN ESTABLISHED FACT AND THAT THIS HAS IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICE RESOURCE ALLOCATION. REGIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT IS THE LOGICAL RESPONSE TO THE STUDY, WITH UNITS ORIENTED TOWARD VIOLENT CRIMES DEVELOPED IN HIGH DENSITY POPULATION AREAS....RCB
