This paper explains how to use Ardrox P-133D, a fluorescent dye penetrant, to enhance faintly developed latent fingerprints and concludes that the use of Ardrox with an isopropanol carrier provides an extremely effective procedure for examining latent fingerprints.
Abstract
Many agencies currently use Ardrox as a 1- or 2- percent solution diluted with methanol. Researchers have also recommended a variety of other Ardrox formulations, with some recommending Freon-based solutions due to the many attributes of the solvent. However, the escalating cost of CFCs and their eventual elimination from the commercial market means that alternative carrier solvent systems needed to be examined. Basic tests determined that 2-propanol (isopropyl alcohol) was an excellent choice for Ardrox, while methanol was actually a poor choice. The proper application of rinses of both water and alcohol, as well as adequate drying intervals, can increase the recovery of usable latent prints, and the use of certain photographic techniques can improve the preservation of revealed latents.
