THIS PAPER, BASED ON A RECENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT STUDY, ADDRESSES THE ISSUE OF APPROPRIATE RESOURCE MATERIALS FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES (LD).
Abstract
CONDUCTED ON A NATIONAL SCALE, THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT STUDY HAD THE ULTIMATE OBJECTIVE OF PROVIDING INFORMATION THAT WOULD ADVANCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENLIGHTENED POLICY ON THE SUBJECT OF LEARNING DISABILITIES AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION. THE STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE AND COMPARE THE PREVALENCE OF LD BETWEEN ADJUDICATED DELINQUENT AND OFFICIALLY NONDELINQUENT SAMPLE POPULATIONS OF 12- TO 15-YEAR OLD BOYS, OPERATE A REMEDIATION PROGRAM FOR A RANDOMLY SELECTED GROUP OF ADJUDICATED DELINQUENTS IDENTIFIED AS HAVING LD CHARACTERISTICS, AND EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE THE FOCUS OF THIS REPORT, INVOLVED 134 DELINQUENTS AGED 12 TO 18 AND WAS BASED ON AN ACADEMIC TREATMENT MODEL IN THE BASIC SKILL AREAS DESIGNED TO AMELIORATE THE EFFECTS OF LD. EXTENSIVE RESOURCE MATERIALS WERE ACQUIRED FOR THIS TREATMENT PROGRAM, GIVING STAFF A DIVERSE SELECTION OF TEACHING AIDS. AFTER AN EXAMINATION PERIOD WITH MATERIALS, LD SPECIALISTS BEGAN USING INDIVIDUALIZED SELECTION MOST EFFECTIVE WITH PARTICULAR STUDENTS. SIX MONTHS INTO THE TREATMENT PROGRAM, STAFF WERE REQUESTED TO FILL OUT A FORM RATING THE RESOURCE MATERIALS USED MOST FREQUENTLY IN EACH AREA OF REMEDIATION. THE MATERIALS WERE RATED IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE, EFFECTIVENESS, AND USE. THE LIST, WHICH COMPOSES THE BULK OF THIS REPORT, CATEGORIZES RESOURCE MATERIALS USED BY SKILL AREAS IN THE ORDER OF MATERIALS FOUND TO BE MOST APPROPRIATE. MATERIALS USED MOST EXTENSIVELY AND RATED MOST POPULAR BY LD SPECIALISTS WERE THOSE EMPHASIZING BASIC CONCEPTS, HIGH INTEREST, LAW VOCABULARY, AND AUDIOVISUAL AIDS SUCH AS ACTIVITY CARDS. APPENDIXES INCLUDE THE STUDY INSTRUMENTS AND COMPLETE MATERIALS LISTINGS BY PROGRAM SITE. (MRK)
