The use of computer information technology in the criminal justice agencies of England and Wales is both widespread and varied.
Abstract
Centrally maintained databases include the Police National Computer, which assists police in criminal investigations; databases related to the licensing of drivers, vehicles, and televisions; and statistical databases, which assist in the evaluation of current and future criminal justice policy and monitor social trends. Local police agencies have access sto a range of computer systems. Some are based on central specifications, but most are specified, procured, and managed by the local agencies themselves. A national strategy for police information systems announced in November 1995 recognizes the need for national polanning to enable the information technology to be used to the greatest advantage. The Crown Prosecution Service uses a case-tracking computer service called Standard Case Operations. The different courts and the correctional system also use computer technology extensively. Linkages and information exchanges among agencies is a separate important issue.
