This article discusses efforts to help law enforcement agencies have reliable communications nationwide and even worldwide.
Abstract
As radios move from analog to digital, Project 25 Steering Committee members are working to create a series of standards to allow reliable communication within departments and among agencies. APCO Project 25 Phase I radio communication products already are on the market and products are being designed to meet Phase II standards. All three phases of Project 25 will allow for more complete interoperability, greater access to automated data systems and full video interoperability from officers in the field to other officers in the field or in a control center. The Project 25 Steering Committee wants a cooperative effort between the European Union users and providers and their peers in North America with the aim of making sure all law enforcement departments and other public safety agencies worldwide can communicate with each other. New devices and systems will be backward compatible with preceding systems so agencies will not be required to scrap their entire system to be compatible.
