Abstract
Statistics show that over the last 3 years the Supreme Court has experienced a 17-percent increase in its caseload and a 38- percent increase in the number of opinions issued. The same trend is true for the Court of Appeals as well as the superior courts. Filings are at an all-time high, and filings continue to increase as the State's population increases. In the juvenile courts, 116,000 cases were filed in the past year. The Commission on Appellate Courts recommends to the Legislature an increase in the number of judges on the Court of Appeals. Superior courts, State courts, juveniles courts, probate courts, magistrate courts, and municipal courts also need additional resources. The budget for the Judicial Branch in fiscal 1996 was $78,549,681 in State funds.
