Patients 6 to 17 years old accounted for 11 percent of emergency department drug abuse episodes, those 18 to 25 accounted for 21 percent, and those 26 or older accounted for 67 percent. Suicide was the motive for drug use in 39 percent of the episodes. Overdose was the reason for the emergency department visit in 53 percent of all DAWN episodes. The metropolitan areas with the greatest numbers of drug-related emergency department visits were New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Chicago.
