Abstract
While there has always been some interest in jails, it was not until John Howard produced his surveys in the latter part of the 18th century that renewed attention was given to these institutions. Howard's publications on jails had a great impact not only upon Europe and the British Isles, but also upon America. The citations annotated in this presentation are taken from a larger document compiled by the authors in which a jail bibliography of 691 items appears. The items reviewed in this article were randomly chosen and date from the early 1920's to 1980. They include books and journal articles.
