This report analyzes the 11,438 Part I victimizations of Hillsborough County residents (Florida), 55 years of age and older, which were reported by the Victim Assistance for Older Adults Program (VAOA) during January 1978-June 1980.
Abstract
The victimization data system is designed to compile crime data hitherto uncollected and to supply the criminal justice community with new insights into crime and its victims. It is intended to furnish a means of developing victim profiles and identifying variables and/or sectors of society that could increase or decrease the probability of a person 55 years or older being victimized. Crimes addressed are rape, robbery, assault, personal larceny, harassing phone calls, fraud, burglary, household/property larceny, motor vehicle theft, and criminal mischief. The frequencies of these crimes committed against older persons are reported, and case dispositions are categorized into those accepting VAOA services, rejecting those services, not needing any services, and unable to contact. Types of crimes are then examined in terms of these dispositions. The types of services offered by VAOA are defined, as are the crimes under study. Crime types are analyzed in terms of crime location and population. Other areas reported in the study include amounts of damage and/or loss; injury and medical information; victim-offender relationships; and victim personal information, such as age, sex, marital status, race, employment, income, residence, and previous victimization. A total of 43 tables accompany the text. Data collection forms and 32 references are appended.
