DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS OF AGGREGATE DATA ON HOUSEHOLD AND BUSINESS VICTIMIZATION BASED ON INTERVIEWS WITH PROBABILITY SAMPLES OF TEN TO TWELVE THOUSAND HOUSEHOLDS AND COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS IN EACH CITY.
Abstract
THESE NATIONAL CRIME PANEL SURVEYS, WHICH TOOK PLACE BETWEEN JULY AND OCTOBER 1972, MEASURED VICTIMIZATION DURING THE PRECEDING TWELVE MONTHS. THIS REPORT BEGINS WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE SURVEYS AND THE NATIONAL CRIME PANEL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM AND THEN PRESENTS A DEMOGRAPHIC OVERVIEW OF THE EIGHT IMPACT CITIES: ATLANTA, BALTIMORE, CLEVELAND, DALLAS, DENVER, NEWARK (NJ), PORTLAND (OR), AND ST. LOUIS. DETAILED DISCUSSIONS OF THE THREE MAJOR TYPES OF VICTIMIZATION - PERSONAL, HOUSEHOLD, AND BUSINESS - INCLUDE NARRATIVE, TABULAR, AND GRAPHIC DATA, AS WELL AS DESCRIPTIONS OF SOME OF THE SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS OF VICTIMS. ALSO CONSIDERED ARE ELEMENTS OF VICTIMIZATION, SUCH AS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE OFFENDER AND THE VICTIM, SELF-PROTECTIVE MEASURES TAKEN BY THE VICTIM, AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF VICTIMIZATION. ALSO ANALYZED ARE THE PHENOMENON OF NON-REPORTING AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SURVEY RESULTS AND THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORT DATA ON OFFENSES KNOWN TO THE POLICE. APPENDED MATERIALS INCLUDE TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION ON THE SURVEYS, SAMPLE SURVEY INSTRUMENTS, THE STANDARD ERROR TABLES, AND A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASSIFICATION OF BUSINESSES IN THE COMMERCIAL VICTIMIZATION SURVEY. FOR THE SUMMARY TO THIS REPORT, SEE NCJ-034587.
