TWO MODELS FOR ANALYZING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM (CJS), THEIR USES, AND APPLICATIONS TO DATA FROM CALIFORNIA.
Abstract
THE FIRST APPROACH DISCUSSED IS THE LINEAR MODEL WHICH VIEWS THE CJS AS A SIMPLE PRODUCTION PROCESS IN WHICH THE PRINCIPAL CONCERN IS THE FLOW THROUGH THE SYSTEM AND THE ACCUMULATION OF COSTS FLOWING FROM A SINGLE ARREST. THE SECOND METHOD DESCRIBED IS THE FEEDBACK MODEL WHICH CONSIDERS THE RECIDIVISM PROBABILITY ASSOCIATED WITH EACH RELEASED DEFENDANT, AND HIS SUBSEQUENT PROCESSING FOR FUTURE ARRESTS AFTER HE HAS ONCE BEEN RELEASED BY THE CJS. THIS PAPER PROVIDES SOME OF THE DETAILS ON THE FORMS OF THESE MODELS AND PRESENTS SOME RESULTS FROM THEIR APPLICATION IN CALIFORNIA. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
