This report examines the characteristics of youth held in pretrial detention by the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services primarily for 1990 and 1991.
Abstract
Section I of the report discusses recent trends in pretrial detention admissions by comparing 1990 and 1991 data. Section II compares variables for female bail admissions in 1990 and 1991, while Section III describes pretrial detention admissions by race and highlights a continued increase in the number of black and Hispanic admissions. Section IV focuses on regional variations among demographic variables, Section V looks at pretrial detention admissions by selected courts, and Section VI reviews demographic trends in detention admissions for the 1985-1991 period. The 2,716 bail admissions into Massachusetts' youth detention system in 1991 represented a 1-percent increase over 1990. The number of female admissions decreased by 5 percent, the number of white admissions increased by 2 percent, the number of black admissions decreased by 6 percent, and the number of Hispanic admissions increased by 8 percent.
