USING INFORMATION COMPILED FROM A COMPUTERIZED DATA FILE OF ADMISSIONS TO THE BRITISH COLUMBIAN CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, THIS NARRATIVE AND STATISTICAL REPORT SHOWS HOW NATIVE INDIANS ARE REPRESENTED IN THE INSTITUTIONS.
Abstract
INSTITUTIONAL ADMISSIONS BY RACIAL ORIGIN ARE DESCRIBED IN TERMS OF ADMISSION CATEGORIES, OFFENSE GROUPS, AGE GROUPS, AND SEX. A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE INSTITUTIONAL AND PROBATION ADMISSIONS FOR THE PROVINCE AS A WHOLE IS GIVEN IN THE SECOND SECTION. SECTION THREE DESCRIBES INSTITUTIONAL ADMISSIONS BY REGION, AND SECTION FOUR DESCRIBES PROBATION ADMISSIONS BY REGION. ANOTHER SECTION GIVES A BREAKDOWN AT THE COURT LOCATION LEVEL FOR INSTITUTIONAL ADMISSIONS, AND THE FINAL SECTION GIVES A COURT LOCATION BREAKDOWN FOR PROBATION ADMISSIONS. AMONG THE FINDINGS, IT IS NOTED THAT PROPORTIONATELY MORE NATIVE INDIANS THAN NON-NATIVES ARE ADMITTED TO INSTITUTIONS FOR DEFINITE JAIL TERMS UNDER TWO YEARS, FOR INDETERMINATE ONLY JAIL TERMS, AND FOR FINE IN DEFAULT.
