THE STUDY ASSESSES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CRIMINAL ACTIVITY AND SELECTED SOCIOECONOMIC VARIABLES IN DURHAM. NORTH CAROLINA.
Abstract
SPECIFICALLY, THE LOCATION OF THE OFFENSE AND THE SUSPECTS' RESIDENCES WERE ANALYZED IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE FOLLOWING VARIABLES; (1) DENSITY (PERSONS PER ACRE AND PERSONS PER ROOM), (2) EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, (3) PERCENT BLACK POPULATON, (4) RESIDENTIAL ATTRITION, (5) RECREATIONAL FACILITIES, (6) MILES OF UNPAVED STREETS, AND (7) PERCENT SUBSTANDARD HOUSNG. THE CRIMES SELECTED FOR ANALYSIS WERE FORCIBLE ENTRY AND LARCENY INVOLVING $200 OR MORE, FOR THE YEARS 1973 AND 1974. THE RESEARCHERS TESTED THE FOLLOWING HYPOTHESES: (1) CERTAIN SOCIOECONOMIC VARIABLES ARE CORRELATES OF NUMBER AND LOCATION OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITY; AND (2) CERTAIN SOCIOECONOMIC VARIABLES ARE CORRELATES OF THE NUMBER AND LOCATION OF CLAIMS FILED FOR FORCIBLE ENTRY AND LARCENY. SUPPORTNG DATA ARE PROVIDED. MAPS OF THE CITY OF DURHAM ILLUSTRATING VARIOUS DEMOGRAPHIC FACTORS SUCH AS INCOME, EDUCATON, AND POPULATION DENSITY ARE INCLUDED, AND BIBLIOGRAPHY IS FURNISHED.
