DISCUSSION OF A WAY TO REPRESENT THE FLOWS OF INDIVIDUALS THROUGH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM FOR FOUR CRIMES.
Abstract
THIS PAPER PRESENTS A MARKOV APPROACH TO THE STUDY OF ONE ASPECT OF THE ANALYSIS OF CRIME CONTROL STRATEGIES - THE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE CRIMINAL POPULATION. MARKOV IS CREDITED WITH DEVELOPING A MATHEMATICAL FORMULA TO ASSESS PROBABILITIES OF TRANSITION TO VARIOUS FUTURE STATES USING THE PRESENT OR PRECEDING STATE AS A DETERMINING CRITERION. RESULTS INDICATE THAT PERSONS WITH PREVIOUS ARREST RECORDS MAY COMMIT A SOMEWHAT SMALLER PROPORTION OF THE COMMON CRIMES OF ROBBERY, BURGLARY, LARCENY OVER FIFTY DOLLARS, AND ASSAULT THAN IS INDICATED BY REARREST DATA.
