Funding from the Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance Formula Grant Program enabled certain drug projects to be conducted in American Samoa between August 1993 and October 1994.
Abstract
Funding facilitated the seizure and destruction of over 200 marijuana plants, the prosecution of drug and corruption cases, the presentation of 4,770 hours of Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), DARE training for police officers, the prosecution of driving under the influence cases, and the deportation of 22 illegal aliens for criminal violations. Funding also enabled the purchase of hardware and software for the District Attorney, the conduct of legal education for prosecutors, the designation of a permanent site for a juvenile treatment center, and the development of a detoxification center for court-referred offenders with addictions. Programs carried out under the Formula Grant Program are summarized in terms of the following purpose areas: law enforcement demand reduction, multijurisdictional task forces, career criminal prosecution, offender treatment, and criminal justice information systems.
