METHODS FOR IMPROVING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PROBATION AND PAROLE WERE DISCUSSED IN SPEECHES AND WORKSHOPS DURING THE 1977 MEETINGS OF THE AMERICAN PROBATION AND PAROLE ASSOCIATION.
Abstract
SPEAKERS DISCUSSED RESEARCH THAT RELATED THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TREATMENT PROGRAMS TO THE REDUCTION OF RECIDIVISM; OBJECTIVES OF THE ANNUAL AMERICAN PROBATION AND PAROLE INSTITUTE INCLUDING STANDARDS, COMMUNICATION, AND INNOVATIVE WORKSHOPS; CURRENT ATTACKS ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CORRECTIONS, PROBATION AND PAROLE; AND A NEED TO BROADEN THE GOALS OF THE PPA AND TO ENCOURAGE ADDITIONAL RESEARCH IN THE AREA. THE WORKSHOPS WERE CONDUCTED BY PROBATION AND PAROLE PROFESSIONALS AND INDIVIDUALS FROM RELATED CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELDS. THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WERE EXAMINED; IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER SEGMENTS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, LOWER COURT DRUNK-DRIVING PROGRAMS, EFFECTS OF TIGHT BUDGETS, PROTECTING THE COMMUNITY WHILE SERVING THE CLIENT, AND CASE MANAGEMENT MODELS. IN ADDITION, WORKSHOPS ON THE IMPACT OF BATTLING FAMILIES, MANDATORY SENTENCES, FEDERAL FUNDING, ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION, AND ADMINISTRATIVE MODELS WERE PRESENTED. THE WORKSHOP LEADERS AND THEIR AFFILIATIONS ARE LISTED AND THE DISCUSSIONS ARE SUMMARIZED. THE PROCEEDINGS INCLUDE LISTS OF APPA INSTITUTE COMMITTEES, OFFICERS, AND WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS. (MJM)
