Abstract
SPEECHES BY THE GOVERNOR OF NEVADA AND THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT ARE REPRINTED ALONG WITH A STUDY OF THE IMPLICATIONS THAT THE POLITICAL DYNAMICS OF CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS HAVE FOR PRISON CHAPLINS. OTHER ISSUES DISCUSSED INCLUDE THE CLASSIFICATION AND TREATMENT OF CORRECTIONAL INMATES, THE IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (BOTH WITHIN THE INSTITUTION ITSELF AND BETWEEN THE INSTITUTION AND THE OUTSIDE COMMUNITY), AND THE CURRENT STATUS OF CORRECTIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS. STUDIES ARE PRESENTED ON THE IMPLICATIONS FOR CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES OF THE MOVEMENT TO COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND THE EDUCATIONAL RECONDITIONING OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS. THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM IS DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF THE EXISTING ALTERNATIVES. SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS FOR HISPANIC AMERICANS AND THE MENTALLY ILL OR RETARDED ARE EXPLORED, AND NONCORRECTIONAL PROGRAM ASPECTS FOR CONVICTED OFFENDERS WITHIN THE FEDERAL SYSTEM ARE DISCUSSED. PROBLEMS OF CORRECTIONAL OVERCROWDING ILLUSTRATED BY A STUDY OF THE VIRGINIA CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH PAROLE AND PROBATION PROGRAMS, (THREE STUDIES PRESENTED), OF SOCIAL CONTROL TECHNIQUES IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, AND THE NEED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CORRECTIONAL STANDARDS ARE SOME OF THE OTHER ISSUES EXAMINED. A STUDY OF EMPLOYMENT PREPARATION FOR FEMALE OFFENDERS IS INCLUDED. SOME OF THE ARTICLES CONTAIN TABLES AND REFERENCES. FOR INDIVIDUAL ARTICLES SEE NCJ 59754-59762. (KCP)
