This curriculum for male batterers is designed to be used in a correctional setting and consists of a core curriculum and a supplemental curriculum.
Abstract
The introduction provides the instructor with a brief overview of the problem of domestic violence, some advantages and disadvantages of using the curriculum in correctional settings, and the reasons it is designed for male offenders rather than female offenders. The introduction also describes the cognitive-behavioral principles and techniques commonly used in working with spouse abusers. The introductory discussion advises that the evaluation of the application of cognitive-behavioral principles to the treatment of spouse abusers is in its early stages and that instructors should modify their techniques as new evaluative research results are available. The four lessons in the core curriculum focus on definitions of abuse and the acceptance of responsibility for it, excuses for abuse and what abuse does to others, some quick steps to curtail aggression, and self-talk (cognitive analysis and modification of behaviors). The supplemental curriculum consists of eight lessons that address childhood and social roots of aggression; the development of new male roles; names that hurt; assertive communication; communication of feelings; faulty thoughts, jealousy, and drugs; the application of what has been learned; and how to maintain what has been learned. The outline for each lesson contains the lesson goal and objectives as well as explanations, activities, and discussion questions for each lesson component.
