DESCRIPTION OF THE FLORIDA OCEAN SCIENCES INSTITUTE OCEANOGRAPHIC EDUCATION PROGRAM, A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DOING REHABILITATION WORK WITH ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL JUVENILE DELINQUENTS.
Abstract
THE COMMUNITY-BASED JUVENILE CORRECTIONS PROGRAM, PART OF A COOPERATIVE GROUP OF SIX FACILITIES, SERVES BROWARD AND PALM BEACH COUNTIES. YOUTH REFERRALS ARE EITHER COMMITTED OR ON PROBATION AND RANGE IN AGE FROM 15 TO 18. THE NORMAL COURSE PROVIDED LASTS FOR SIX MONTHS AND CONSISTS OF A CURRICULUM OF MARINE-ORIENTED SUBJECTS AND SUBJECTS REQUIRED FOR HIGH-SCHOOL GRADUATION. THE MARINE-ORIENTED SUBJECTS ARE ALL APPROVED FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AND INVOLVE A FIFTY-FIFTY RATIO OF CLASSROOM-TO-FIELD ACTIVITY IN RED CROSS FIRST AID AND LIFE SAVING, SKIN AND SCUBA DIVING, SEAMANSHIP, AND OCEANOGRAPHY.
