This report describes the nature and extent of alcohol and other drug abuse in Czechoslovakia as well as recent trends in the use of nine groups of drugs.
Abstract
The most frequently abused drugs are analgesics containing codeine followed by amphetamines, barbituates, tranquilizers, and inhalants. Other abused drugs include antiparkinsonism drugs, thymoeretic drugs, anti-epileptic drugs, and marijuana. In 1985 the nation had 9,900 registered drug addicted, with 720 additional addicts for every registered one. Czechoslovakia ranks 13th in the world in the average annual alcohol consumption per person. The average consumption is about 9.5 liters of 100 percent alcohol annually. In 1985 the country had 239,385 registered alcoholics, of whom 18,746 were female. Treatment is provided through detoxification departments, outpatient treatment, and institutional care as well as inmate drug treatment and involuntary treatment. Self-help groups do not exist. Treatment aims at complete abstention and varies in effectiveness from program to program. 26 references (Author abstract modified)
