The variable description list and codebook are provided for the 1974-76 Alaska study of how offender characteristics affect case outcomes, particularly plea bargaining decisions.
Abstract
An introduction describes the study's data collection procedures, file structure, codebook information, and information processing. Data were collected from police booking sheets, public fingerprint files, and court dockets in Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks, covering the period of August 1974 to August 1976. The unit of observation was the felony case. The 192 variables included offender demographic and social characteristics, criminal history, characteristics, criminal history, nature of the offense, evidence, victim characteristics, and administrative factors related to the case disposition. The data for each of the 3,586 cases are available in two formats: card image and OSIRIS. A glossary and frequency addendum are also provided, and the appendix contains felony offense classes and offense codes.
