THIS ARTICLE EXPLORES WHAT STEPS HAVE BEEN AND CAN BE TAKEN TO PREVENT INSTANCES OF AIR PIRACY.
Abstract
PAST INTERNATIONAL CONVENTIONS HAVE LAID DOWN GUIDELINES AND RULES OF CONDUCT GOVERNING RELATIONS BETWEEN COUNTRIES ON THE HIGH SEAS. IN 1970 THE HAGUE CONVENTION DEVELOPED A NUMBER OF ARTICLES GOVERNING UNLAWFUL SEIZURE OF AIRCRAFT. IT ACKNOWLEDGED THAT JURISDICTION OVER SUCH EVENTS WOULD FALL TO THE NATION TO WHICH THE AIRCRAFT WAS REGISTERED. AN INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION IN MONTREAL IN 1971 ADDED FURTHER REFINEMENTS TO THE HAGUE AGREEMENTS. THE ARTICLE RAISES THE NEED TO CONVINCE ALL NATIONS NOT ABIDING BY THESE INTERNATIONAL RULES TO BEGIN TO DO SO.. ..BDS
