Abstract
Individual sections discuss the prevalence of HIV infection among adolescents, the characteristics and numbers of adolescents at highest risk for HIV infection, and issues involved in presenting HIV education for these youths. Details are provided on the demographics of youth involved with juvenile justice and social service systems, youth in juvenile correctional facilities, runaway and homeless youth, youth involved in prostitution, youth in foster care, youth in mental health and drug treatment programs, and school dropouts. Further sections explain child and adolescent development; the behavioral factors associated with HIV infection; adolescents' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about AIDS; and barriers to effective HIV education among high-risk youth. Existing curricula for high-risk youth are reviewed, and evaluation issues are explored. Figures, table, addresses of curriculum sources, appended lists of organizations providing HIV information and education, and approximately 150 references
