TEST OF A SPEECH PRESENTED AT A CONFERENCE ON AFTER-CARE IN THE SEVENTIES, DEALING WITH THE DEFINITION OF AFTERCARE, THE PROBLEM OF STIGMATIZATION OF EX-OFFENDERS, AND THE CURRENT STATE OF AFTERCARE IN GREAT BRITAIN.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR STATES THAT THE REINTEGRATION OF THE OFFENDER INTO SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE ROLES IS THE GOAL OF AFTER-CARE. IT IS CONTENDED, HOWEVER, THAT A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF MAGISTRATES AND JUDGES STILL SEE THE JUDICIAL PROCESS AND THE PENAL SYSTEM IN TERMS OF THE PUNISHMENT OF CRIME RATHER THAN THE TREATMENT OF OFFENDERS. PROBLEMS WITHIN THE AFTERCARE SERVICES, SUCH AS CONFLICTS BETWEEN PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR WORKERS, INCREASES IN THE AFTERCARE SERVICES, AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS OF AFTERCARE ARE ALSO DISCUSSED.
