THE PATERNALISTIC ATTITUDE OF HOSTEL WARDENS AND THE DEPENDENT PREDILICTIONS AND CHILDISH ACTING-OUT BEHAVIOR OF THE INMATE TENANTS MAY EXACERBATE THE VERY SITUATION THAT HOSTELS WERE DESIGNED TO AMELIORATE.
Abstract
HOSTELS ARE DESIGNED TO REHABILITATE OFFENDERS SUFFICIENTLY TO ALLOW REINTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY. HOWEVER, THE FAMILY-TYPE SITUATION, PREVALENT IN SO MANY HOSTELS, IN WHICH A MARRIED COUPLE IS IN CHARGE, CREATES PROBLEMS, NOT THE LEAST OF WHICH IS THE RELUCTANCE OF THE WARDEN TO RELEASE HIS MOST SUCCESSFUL AND REHABILITATED CLIENTS. CASE STUDIES ILLUSTRATE THE AUTHOR'S CONTENTIONS.
