This study presents data and information on adults under supervision and detention orders in Australia.
Abstract
Offenders for whom data are provided are those serving noncustodial orders, mostly probation and community service orders; those in prison serving orders, including both remandees and sentenced inmates; and those serving postprison orders, including parole and license. Data address persons serving the various orders and under supervision and detention orders by jurisdiction. Statistics on persons under various supervision or detention orders cover sex, Aboriginal, never married, unemployed at arrest data, did not complete secondary education, overseas born, and previously imprisoned. A table presents the estimated average per capita costs per year of persons by jurisdiction. The use of supervision and detention orders varies considerably between jurisdictions in Australia. Sentencing authorities face a dilemma when imprisonment costs the community significantly, but less costly alternatives expose the community to further offending. 8 tables, 9 references.
