Abstract
In discussing the importance of campus public safety, this book provides an overview of the emergence of college campus public safety, the nature and extent of campus crime, and the dual roles of law enforcement and service for campus police. Among the organizational considerations addressed are the place of campus security within the university organizational hierarchy, organizational concepts, the organization of the campus public safety department, the responsibilities of functional units, and position classifications and descriptions. Other issues pertinent to organization and management are effective leadership and management, budget and records management, and personnel management. The categories of services discussed are law enforcement services, security and safety services, support services, equipment and facility considerations, and special services and programs. The concluding section on the enhancement of campus public safety focuses on cooperation with community public safety agencies and an assessment of achievements and challenges.
