Abstract
The five papers in section one examine the nature of criminal justice organizations by placing them in the context of organizational theory. Topics covered include two models of the criminal justice system, the rhetoric of community policing, the desirability of goal conflict within the criminal justice system, the impact of drugs on criminal justice in a metropolitan community system, and trial courts as organizations. The six papers in section two examine the role of individual personnel in the criminal justice system, with attention to motivation, leadership, and job design. The six papers in section three focus on group behavior; these papers address conflict, power, and socialization among criminal justice personnel. Section four contains five papers on administrative processes, such as decision-making, effectiveness, and planning. Section five, which contains six papers, deals with change in criminal justice organizations, as it focuses on theoretical issues and case studies. The eight new articles in this third edition all address central concerns about how criminal justice organizations will function in the 21st century. Chapter references
