This address reviews research initiatives by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) intended to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of law enforcement in the United States.
Abstract
Research on the use of private security indicates Americans' increasing reliance on it and the need for public police to cooperate in private security efforts. Other NIJ research includes the innovative use of crime analysis to reduce citizens' fear of crime, an experiment in police response to domestic assault that shows the effectiveness of arrest, the use of differential police response in accordance with type of service call, and the development of an information< network to facilitate the apprehension of serial murderers. NIJ research has also identified career criminals, tested equipment to increase police safety, and mounted public and professional education programs. Overall, NIJ has promoted the application of research findings in the development of police policies and practices, thus assisting police management.
