AN ANALYSIS IS PRESENTED OF THE JUDICIAL PROCESSING OF THE 29 ADULTS ARRESTED FOR ROBBERY IN ADA COUNTY, IDAHO, DURING 1975.
Abstract
THE ANALYSIS, BY THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS CENTER OF THE STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT PLANNING COMMISSION, WAS PART OF A LARGER STUDY OF ROBBERY ARRESTS IN SIX IDAHO COUNTIES. A SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM SHOWS HOW PERSONS ARRESTED FOR ROBBERY PROCEEDED THROUGH THE STAGES OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, DENOTING THE PERCENTAGE OF THOSE ARRESTED WHO REACHED EACH STATE OF LEGAL PROCEEDINGS. A SECOND, SIMILAR DIAGRAM SHOWS PERCENTAGES BY DECISION POINT (E.G., THE PERCENTAGES OF ALL CONVICTED PERSONS SENTENCED TO PRISON, JAIL, OR PROBATION). A NARRATIVE ACCOUNT COVERS THE STATUS OF ROBBERY ARRESTEES RELATIVE TO CONSIDERATION FOR PROSECUTION, PRETRIAL RELEASE, REPRESENTATION BY LEGAL COUNSEL, RESULTS OF PROSECUTION (DISMISSAL, ACQUITTAL, CONVICTION, GUILTY PLEAS), AND SENTENCING. A TIME FRAME ANALYSIS SHOWS THAT IT REQUIRED AN AVERAGE OF 146.7 DAYS FOR A ROBBERY CASE TO MOVE FROM ARREST TO DISPOSITION. DIFFERENCE IN TIME FRAME AMONG THE COUNTY'S FIVE DISTRICT COURT JUDGES ARE ALSO ANALYZED. SUPPORTING DATA ARE INCLUDED. (LKM)
