Abstract
In 1997, data were collected by interviewing 9,599 Finns in the age group 15 years or older. The surveys measured physical safety by accounting for sudden, unexpected, health-damaging incidents caused by external events. They are presented as traffic and work accidents, accidents at home, sports and other leisure time accidents, and physical violence. The surveys also dealt with property crimes, fear of crime and safety attitudes of the population. One out of six Finns in the age range of 15 to 74 years had suffered a physical injury, caused by an accident or personal violence, with sports accidents accounting for the largest number of injuries Traffic accidents resulted in 63,000 cases of physical injury, and there were 239,000 accidents at home. Violent incidents are divided into family, small group, work-related, street and random violence. Tables, appendix
