THIS ILLUSTRATED TRAINING MANUAL ON WRITING A JOB RESUME IS DESIGNED FOR USE BY JAIL INMATES IN A PREEMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM AIMED AT INCREASING WORK-RELATED SOCIAL SKILLS.
Abstract
AFTER COMPLETING THE TRAINING UNIT OF WHICH THIS MANUAL IS A PART, THE LEARNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO WRITE A RESUME ACCORDING TO A SPECIFIED MODEL AND WRITE A COVER LETTER. SPECIFIC LEARNING POINTS INCLUDE IDENTIFYING THE RESUME PURPOSE, GIVING INFORMATION SO THAT STRENGTHS ARE EMPHASIZED, AND LISTING INFORMATION ON EMPLOYMENT OBJECTIVE, EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER EXPERIENCE. THE MANUAL INCLUDES A LIST OF LEARNING GOALS AND SUBGOALS, DIRECTIONS FOR USING THE MANUAL, UNIT PRETEST AND POSTTEST, ILLUSTRATED STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS FOR WRITING A RESUME AND COVER LETTER, A SAMPLE COVER LETTER AND RESUME, UNIT-TEST KEY, AND WORD LIST. THE MANUAL IS PART OF A CURRICULUM MATERIALS PACKAGE DEVELOPED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM, FUNDED BY AN LEAA GRANT, WAS IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS IN 1979. TITLED COORDINATED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS, IT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING CONSUMER AND LIFE SKILLS NEEDED TO COPE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AS WELL AS SKILLS RELATED TO LOCATING AND FINDING EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILES AND TO OTHER TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS.
